How to treat ink stains on clothes

The main advice, which we have mentioned before in other articles, is to act as soon as possible. Ink has certain pigments which penetrates into our clothes very quickly and also has a quick drying time. Acting fast can save our garment.

Firstly, we need to know the type of ink the pen has. Some are washable, made for school supplies and young children, and are water based, which is easy to wash and remove.

Ordinary pen ink is more complicated to remove, but not impossible. With our tips, you’ll achieve excellent results.

There is also permanent or indelible ink. As its name suggests, it’s permanent, which means we’ll have to throw the garment away unless we want to use it as a costume.

Steps for cleaning ink stains on clothes

The first step to remove ink stains from clothes is to remove the excess. For this, we’ll need some sheets of kitchen paper folded into several layers to press on the stain. The most effective way to do it is to place the garment on a table or rigid surface.

It’s important to press the stain and not rub it, as we could make the stain bigger and the aim is to absorb excess ink.

As we mentioned, water based inks are easier to remove. If it’s a recent stain, it can be washed in the washing machine as normal. The hot water will be enough to remove the ink stains. If we suspect that it will be more difficult to remove the stain, due to the fabric or color of the ink, we can apply stain remover before putting it into the washing machine.

Ink stains from a normal pen need to be pre-treated to be removed. There are many products we can use but we recommend alcohol spray. This, or rubbing alcohol, can be found in pharmacies and supermarkets.

Put the garment on a smooth, hard surface. Put a cloth under the stained area of the garment to protect the table and avoid ink transfers. We apply alcohol spray onto the stain, which will dilute it and help it detach from the fabric.

The alcohol dries very quickly so the garment needs to be put into the washing machine on a hot wash with detergent right after we apply it. It’s advisable to wash the garment separately incase the ink stains other clothes.

In this process you can replace alcohol with hairspray or ammonia diluted in water, one part ammonia to two parts water. These liquids can help remove the stain and the garment regains its color. This can be repeated over time until the stain is completely removed.

Permanent ink stains are the hardest to remove but we can use the same processes. If we act quickly and effectively, it’s likely that we can remove the stain and help mitigate it, although, as we indicated at the start, it will be difficult to remove it completely.

As we have seen in other articles, our kitchens are full of natural ‘’stain removing’’ products. Milk is the most suitable for removing ink stains from clothes. Heat some in a glass and pour it over the stain. Let it soak for a few minutes and rinse off the excess before putting it into the washing machine.

If the stain resists, rubbing it with a toothbrush can help, but be careful not to spread the stain.
